Taboos and the Forbidden
Cultural taboos include the consumption of animal flesh, the handling of dead bodies and a distaste for the ocean. The typical Nayan is vegetarian, and the Nayan diet often contains little if any meat. Animals are seen as being close to Asura as they are savage and wild, so consuming their flesh is akin to taking the beast inside of you. Nayans cremate their dead, since a body of ash can not be perverted and is pure, not left to rot. The ocean makes you sick if you drink from it, and it's fury claims lives and consumes settlements. As a result, it is considered unclean an savage and any time spent on a seafaring vessel requires rituals to cleanse the taint. As a result, Nayans are not a particularly seafaring people.
